Filmmaker Alexandre Aja was already doing well for himself with movies like “Haute Tension,” “The Hills Have Eyes” remake and “Piranha 3D”.
But 2019’s fun creature feature “Crawl” was something of a breakthrough for him, the movie scoring strong reviews and overcoming a lack of promotion to result in a $92 million box-office haul off a $13-15 million budget.
Talking to Bloody Disgusting’s The Boo Crew Chat podcast this week whilst promoting the French-language sci-fi mystery thriller “Oxygen,” Aja says he’s talking “nonstop” to make a “Crawl” sequel happen and right now the team is trying to find a way into the story.
He indicates whatever it is it likely won’t involve Kaya Scodelario’s Haley again, rather be more of a thematic/scenario follow-up:
“I think the story of Haley is a really strong one, but I believe that Crawl is about nature taking back its due, and kind of like… more hurricane-driven, man versus animal. So maybe it will be another story altogether…. [we’re] looking for that human story right now, that will be as strong as the one in the first one. To make the second one legit.”
Set in the middle of a coastal community being hit by a tropical hurricane, a young woman races to her father’s house to find him – only to find herself and the injured dad trapped in a slowly flooding basement with at least two hungry alligators.
It’s not clear if the first film’s writers Michael and Shaw Rasmussen would be back, but he says the creative team is “putting together a really, really fun take”.
