Alan Menken Becomes A True EGOT

Famed film composer Alan Menken (“The Little Mermaid,” “Aladdin”) has become only the sixteenth person to achieve that rarest of creative arts honors – EGOT status.

To be an EGOT you have to win an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and a Tony award for your work, and Menken finally won an Emmy yesterday as part of the Daytime Emmy Awards ceremony.

Menken and lyricist Glenn Slater won the award for best original song in a children’s, young adult or animated program for their number “Waiting in the Wings” for “Rapunzel’s Tangled Adventure” on Disney Channel.

Menken has previously received an honorary Primetime Emmy in 1990, but this marks his first competitive Emmy – EGOT status requires ‘winning’ all four awards. Menken has won eight Oscars, eleven Grammys and in 2012 he got a Tony Award for “Newsies”.

Others who’ve made EGOT status include John Legend, Whoopi Goldberg, Audrey Hepburn, Mel Brooks and Mike Nichols, while some are just one award away from doing so like Cher, Kate Winslet, Viola Davis, Helen Mirren, Julie Andres, Lin-Manuel Miranda and Common.
