One of the big questions surrounding “Star Wars: Ahsoka,” even before it premiered, regarded the identity of the lightsaber wielding masked individual known as Marrok.
The character is an always masked Inquisitor first revealed in the trailers and whom, so far, has basically served as a henchman alongside Ray Stevenson’s es-Jedi Baylan Skoll, and Ivanna Sakhno’s Shin Hati.
Whilst those two have a classic “Star Wars” master-apprentice style relationship, how the red lightsaber-wielding Marrok fits in is unclear.
Theories have ranged far and wide from the character being the missing Ezra Bridger, to others suggesting it’s Galen Marek – aka. Starkiller – from the “Star Wars: The Force Unleashed” video games.
Much like the Rey’s parents question in the sequel trilogy, what is a small part of the story seems to have become a central topic of discussion on Reddit and other boards and forums – and how it will pay off could have an impact on the perception of the whole series.
The recently aired third episode has shifted theories a bit. According to Screen Rant, the first two episodes list Paul Darnell as Marrok’s stunt performer but as the character has no dialogue in those there is no other credit. In the third episode however, where we hear Marrok speak, Darnell is listed as ‘featuring’ which suggests that’s his voice.
This has shifted talk away from the Ezra Bridger theories, but not the Starkiller theories. Actor Sam Witwer, who lent his voice and likeness to the Starkiller character in the games, also appears in Ahsoka’s credits as an additional voice actor – but his role is unknown. Marrok has experience in the franchise before, serving as the stunt double for Timothy Olyphant’s Cobb Vanth in the second season of “The Mandalorian”.
Meanwhile the third episode has also led to some reveals that have generated discussion, such as Huyang’s reveal that a “few” Mandalorians having become Jedi in the past (not just one as previously thought)
Then there’s the re-democratising of The Force again with Ahsoka herself indicating the Force is ‘inside everyone’ but there are elements of talent, discipline and training involved.
More reveals are expected to arrive when the fourth episode hits next Tuesday. Check out a just released new TV spot below.
