The fourth episode of “Star Wars: Ahsoka” has gone to air and in doing so it answers the question that has been plaguing social media for weeks now – who is Marrok?
SPOILERS AHEAD FOR “STAR WARS: AHSOKA” EPISODE 4
The new episode is essentially a cliffhanger – closing out plot elements dangling over the first four episodes whilst our heroes seem to be in their darkest place thus far, with bigger questions left hanging over Ahsoka, Sabine, Thrawn… and another Jedi.
There had been a lot of near ‘Rey’s real parents’-level speculation that the masked red lightsaber-wielding Inquisitor Marrok character would be key to the story, turns out not so much as following a battle with Ahsoka he’s sliced through the middle and crumbles into green smoke that dissipates with a scream.
Thus all the theories involving Starkiller, Ezra Bridger and more have come to an end and none of them really turned out to be true, but that’s not to say it answered everything – in fact it may have raised more questions than anything else.
What it does seem to suggest is this supporting henchman was just that, and likely no-one of any significance in the franchise’s lore. That’s not to say there won’t be some further information regarding him, and more specifically how he came to be.
No he wasn’t auditioning to be the Smoke Monster in a “Lost” revival, rather the most likely theory now ties to the Morgan Elsbeth character who is a Nightsister – one of the Force-wielding Witches of Dathomir.
Previously it has been seen in the animated series lore that those imbued with Nightsister magic, including Darth Maul’s brother Savage Opress, let off green smoke when they die and reverted back to their original form. The Nightsisters were also capable of some level of necromancy and so Marrok could’ve been a resurrected fellow Nightsister.
Disappointment regarding tonight’s reveal may be tempered by anticipation for next week’s episode as both Anakin Skywalker and Grand Admiral Thrawn look like they will come into play, whilst the World between Worlds came to the live-action form of the franchise and should feature heavily in the next episode.
The fourth episode of “Ahsoka” is online on Disney+ right now.
