Adult Swim has announced the currently in-production Toonami series “Lazarus”, which hails from renowned anime director Shinichiro Watanabe (“Cowboy Bebop,” “Samurai Champloo”).

The story begins in the year 2052 – an era of unprecedented peace and prosperity that prevails across the globe after mankind has been freed from sickness and pain following Nobel Prize-winning neuroscientist Dr. Skinner developing a miracle cure-all drug with no apparent side effects called Hapuna.

The drug becomes ubiquitous and essential to humanity, but shortly after its introduction, Dr. Skinner vanishes.

Three years later, the world has moved on which is when Dr. Skinner has returned – this time mankind’s saviour has become the harbinger of its doom as he announces everyone who has taken the drug will die approximately three years after the time it was administered.

A special task force, codenamed ‘Lazarus’, of five agents is quickly gathered from across the world to save humanity from Skinner’s plan and develop a vaccine before time runs out.

Produced by Sola Entertainment and animated by Studio MAPPA, the series boasts action sequences designed by “John Wick” franchise helmer Chad Stahelski. Kamasi Washington, Floating Points and Bonobo are all working on the show’s jazz and electronic score.

The first look at the series takes place at San Diego Comic Con on Saturday. No release window has yet been targeted.
