Sony Pictures is reportedly sending out an updated version of “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” to cinemas shortly.
Twitter account Cryptic HD QUALITY, which usually posts scoops dealing with 4K content and film runtimes, says this new version contains “better sound mixing”.
In a follow-up tweet, they indicated theaters have received emails stating that the new digital cinema packages (DCP) will be sent out on Friday – so some audiences will have to wait a few days to see the updated version. They add: “Sony has listened and has been fixing the issue.”
The film opened in cinemas last Friday, and whilst the reception to it has been universally positive, one of the few and yet frequent audience complaints has been in regards to the film’s audio mix – especially the extended pre-titles opening sequences.
Complaints about what specifically is wrong with the mix have varied though mostly it has been about the drowning out of dialogue, such as a scene with Gwen Stacy (Hailee Steinfeld) talking whilst drums are playing.
This writer experienced audio issues at my screenings – in my case, the cinema seemed to overcompensate for the drowned-out dialogue by turning down the volume so the music was quite faint. It seemed to fix itself after about 15 minutes.
Co-writer and producer Phil Lord offered a solution to those experiencing problems on social media. He told people to check with cinemas and tell them to set the volume at reference (7).
The film opened to over $120.5 million at the domestic box office this past weekend, and its worldwide total currently sitting at $247.7 million.
