Mel Brooks will produce a live musical stage version of his famed 1974 film “Young Frankenstein” for ABC. This will be ABC’s second live musical following the success with “The Little Mermaid” in November.
The original film followed the grandson of the infamous Victor Frankenstein (pronounced ‘Fronk-en-steen’) as he travels to Transylvania and continues his grandfather’s work. Brooks directed and co-wrote the screenplay with Gene Wilder.
Brooks debuted the stage version in 2007 which he wrote the music and lyrics for, that version ran on Broadway for two years and was nominated for three Tony Awards.
ABC announced the project during the TCA’s this week, along with announcing that a live episode of “The Conners” will air the night of the New Hampshire Primary next month and coverage of the real-time results of that political event will be incorporated into the broadcast.
