A24 Adding Action Alongside Arthouse

Indie distributor A24, known for its celebrated auteur-driven dramas and smart genre fare, is reportedly seeking more ‘action and big IP projects’ to distribute according to The Wrap.

An agent familiar with the company tells the outlet that A24 are “de-emphasizing the traditional character/auteur-driven dramas” with another source saying they won’t stop doing these kinds of films, but are looking at bigger projects to join them and “widening the aperture” as such to include more commercial fare.

Part of the issue is A24 lost money in the past several years on projects including “Waves,” “The Green Knight,” and most notably the costly flop “Beau Is Afraid”.

A lot of the beating on dramas they took on the ones they made themselves. Thus a pivot to more commercial films is seen as necessary, with their acclaimed dramas more likely to be acquisitions.

This can already be seen in recent horror-related deals such as the “Friday the 13th” prequel series “Crystal Lake,” the greenlighting of a sequel to their breakout horror hit “Talk to Me,” and their pursuit of a “Halloween” TV series.

The trade adds that over the summer, A24 acquisition executive Noah Sacco reportedly made rounds at talent agencies in search of “action and big IP projects”.
