A Third “Sicario” Is In Active Development

Producers Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee have confirmed that a third film in the “Sicario” franchise is in development.

The 2015 film saw the teaming of many great talents – “Dune” director Denis Villeneuve, “Yellowstone” creator Taylor Sheridan who penned the script, “Skyfall” lenser Roger Deakins, and a whole host of talent in front of the camera including Emily Blunt, Benicio del Toro, Josh Brolin and Daniel Kaluuya.

Made on a relatively modest $30 million budget, the acclaimed thriller scored some of the year’s best reviews, landed three Oscar nominations, and generated $85 million at the box-office.

Stefano Sollima took over as director for the second film which generated $75.8 million from a $40 million budget. There’s been talk of a third entry for a while but no real movement on it.

Out promoting the “John Wick” spin-off TV series “The Continental,” Iwanyk and Lee spoke with The Messenger and confirmed “Sicario 3” was coming with Iwanyk saying “oh yeah” and Lee then adding: “when we can continue writing it [due to the strike]. It was pencils down, but the idea is awesome.”

Iwanyk adds he’s keen to see Benicio playing his character again: “I can’t wait for Sicario 3. I could watch Benicio play that guy forever. I mean, I can watch Benicio in anything, but with that character, it doesn’t get old.”

“The Continental: From the World of John Wick” premieres on September 22nd with the first of a three-episode event series.
