Warner Bros. Pictures has set Jorge R. Gutiérrez as director of an animated feature centered on the classic Looney Tunes character Speedy Gonzales reports THR.
Gutiérrez himself previously teased the possibility on Instagram last month, posting a photo of himself holding a Speedy Gonzales figurine and adding: “Guess what movie I might be developing at Warner Brothers Pictures Animation.”
Gutiérrez co-created Emmy-winning series such as “El Tigre: The Adventures of Manny Rivera” and “Maya and the Three” along with the 2014 film “The Book of Life”, which Guillermo del Toro produced.
Story details are under wraps, and a writer has not yet been announced. The popular Looney Tunes character debuted in the 1950s in an Oscar-winning Merrie Melodies short film.
The character was most recently seen in 2021’s “Space Jam: A New Legacy” with Gabriel Iglesias voicing him.
Warner Bros. previously a film reboot over a decade ago with Eugenio Derbez cast in the lead role.
