A New “Hunger Games” Novel In 2025

Lionsgate

After “The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes” made $337.4 million at the global box office on a $100 million budget, it would come as little surprise if Lionsgate wouldn’t be already planning an adaptation of a newly announced novel.

“Hunger Games” franchise author Suzanne Collins has revealed that a new book in the saga, one titled “Sunrise on the Reaping,” is in the works and will be released next year – March 18th 2025.

This fifth novel in Collins’ bestselling series is a mid-quel set forty years after the events of ‘Ballad’ and just over thirty years before the original “The Hunger Games”.

Events will unfold during the Second Quarter Quell, the game that was won by Woody Harrelson’s fan-favorite character Haymitch Abernathy in the films. Collins tells the Associated Press:

“With ‘Sunrise on the Reaping,’ I was inspired by David Hume’s idea of implicit submission and, in his words, ‘the easiness with which the many are governed by the few’.

The story also lent itself to a deeper dive into the use of propaganda and the power of those who control the narrative. The question ‘Real or not real?’ seems more pressing to me every day.”

“The Hunger Games” film series is the twentieth highest-grossing franchise of all time, generating $3.3 billion for Lionsgate.
