A “Maserati” Biopic Is In The Works

Andrea Iervolino is set to produce “Maserati: A Racing Life,” an English-language biopic about the family behind the high-performance Italian car brand. Iervolino’s ILBE Group and Monika Bacardi are backing the project.

ILBE has already produced biopics about the two other major Italian high-end luxury automakers recently – Bobby Moresco’s “Lamborghini: The Man Behind the Legend” starring Frank Grillo which was released last year, and Michael Mann’s upcoming “Ferrari” film featuring Adam Driver, Penelope Cruz, and Shailene Woodley.

An international director and cast are still being decided with Iervolino set to officially unveil the project to prospective buyers in Cannes in May ahead of a planned shoot in Italy in September.

Maserati was founded in 1914 in Bologna by three brothers: Alfieri, Ettore and Ernesto. Long tied to the world of auto racing, the film will reportedly focus on the figure of Alfieri Maserati.

His first Grand Prix racing car, the ‘Type 26,’ was driven in the 1927 Messina Cup race. Alfieri died a few years later from complications related to a near-fatal crash he had during that race.

Unlike the “Lamborghini” film which was adapted from a book by a family member, Iervolino is basing the story on aspects of the Maserati family that are public domain. He is, however, in talks with the Maserati family and with the company to get them on board.
