The “Barbie” film has yet to premiere, but a new report from scooper Daniel Richtman (via World of Reel) suggests that at least one spin-off is already in discussion.
The report suggests a film centered on Ryan Gosling’s Ken may already be in development with Gosling attached to star. The report claims the project is in such early stages there are no other names attached at this point, assuming the report is true.
Gosling’s Ken has become a scene stealer in the lead-up campaign, thanks in part to Gosling’s dryly-humoured interview quotes about his character’s Ken-ergy.
“Barbie” is currently on track for a projected $80-100 million opening weekend domestically and is also drawing a lot of attention overseas.
In the film, a doll living in ‘Barbieland’ is expelled for not being perfect enough and sets off on an adventure in the real world. Greta Gerwig (“Lady Bird”) directed and co-wrote the script with her partner Noah Baumbach.
Margot Robbie takes on the iconic role of Barbie alongside Gosling’s Ken. They’re joined by Emma Mackey, Dua Lipa, Issa Rae, Alexandra Shipp, Emerald Fennell, Kate McKinnon, Ritu Arya, Hari Nef, Sharon Rooney, Ana Cruz Kayne and Nicola Coughlan as other Barbies along with Simu Liu, Ncuti Gatwa, Kingsley Ben-Adir and Scott Evans as other Kens.
America Ferrera, Michael Cera, Will Ferrell, Connor Swindells, Ariana Greenblatt, Jamie Demetriou and Helen Mirren also star. The film opens everywhere on July 21st.
