Despite mixed reviews, Universal Pictures’ “The Fate of the Furious” is exceeding expectations in the 63 territories it is opening this weekend.
According to the studio, Friday’s overseas gross is $112.1 million for an early total of $194.8 million with the overseas weekend estimate at $430.4 million which is easily the biggest non-U.S. global opening weekend of any film – beating previous champ “Jurassic World” which tallied $316.7 million.
Additionally, the film’s North American estimated gross on track for $103.8 million, which brings it to a worldwide total of $534.2 million. If those numbers hold, ‘Fate’ will beat the $529 million of “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” to have the biggest global opening of all time.
Additionally, as of Friday, the Fast & Furious series crossed $4 billion at the worldwide box office. In China, the film’s opening day box office of $65.6 million has set the record for the biggest single day ever at the Chinese box office.
