J.J. Abrams tries his best Steven Spielberg impression with “Super 8”, one of the few original films of the Summer. Critics have generally been positive, scoring an impressive 82% and 7.6/10 on Rotten Tomatoes, and a quite good 72/100 on Metacritic.
Everyone seems to like the performances by the kids and the direction by Abrams. How they feel about the alien and sci-fi elements that gradually come to take over the proceedings however is proving much more divisive. As I said in my review, I liked the kids but wasn’t a fan of the creature elements and thought the film itself fell apart in the second half. How much the nostalgia factor plays on people’s reactions is also a big question right now.
Box-office wise no-one is quite sure what to predict, though estimates have it in the $20-30 million range, pretty good for a relatively cheap $50 million film without any pre-built franchise. Now’s the time for your say – was it a welcome return to old school filmmaking and a satisfying journey, or were you simply bored?
