New Line has acquired the rights to the “Shaft” franchise and is teaming with Davis Entertainment to develop a reboot of the popular films about a black NYPD detective.
Gordon Parks directed the original 1971 movie with Richard Roundtree, John Singleton helmed the Samuel L. Jackson-led reboot in 2000 which was actually a prequel with Jackson’s character the nephew of Roundtree’s.
It’s not certain if this will start afresh or serve as a sort-of sequel as well. What is certain is Jackson isn’t coming back and a new and younger actor will be cast.
John Davis (“Predator,” “The Man From U.N.C.L.E.”) will produce.
