Legendary Entertainment, the major production company behind franchises like “Dune,” “A Minecraft Movie” and the “Godzilla” Monsterverse films, has reportedly revived a bid to acquire Lionsgate.
The news emerged via a Bloomberg report, which claims Legendary has submitted an acquisition offer for Lionsgate.
The report, arriving a few weeks before Lionsgate is set to disclose quarterly earnings on November 5th, has sent Lionsgate shares up by 15% today – pushing its market cap to $3.6 billion.
The report didn’t go into deal terms, but one obvious motive for Legendary to acquire the title is that it would allow them to self-distribute their films.
Lionsgate has been a long-rumoured acquisition target for various studios, especially since it split off from Starz in May 2025. Lionsgate’s franchises include the likes of “John Wick,” “Twilight,” “The Hunger Games,” and “Saw” along with a content library of 20,000-plus titles including this year’s massive box-office sensation “Michael”.
Upcoming Lionsgate titles include the Noah Centineo-starring reboot “John Rambo” and Mel Gibson’s two-part epic “The Resurrection of the Christ”. Legendary’s most recent film was the just released “Street Fighter” movie.
