“IT: Welcome to Derry” Season 2 Update

HBO

Following its renewal order back in August, pre-production is well underway on the second season of HBO’s “IT: Welcome to Derry” series.

Brad Caleb Kane takes over as sole showrunner for the second season run as Jason Fuchs steps back, while “IT” film director Andy Muschietti remains onboard as executive producer and actively involved in the series.

While promoting Peacock’s new “Crystal Lake” series, Kane offered an update to Deadline on where the new season stands:

“We’re writing the scripts. We’re about halfway through the writing of the scripts. We have a production schedule, we’re greenlit for a Season 2, and Andy Muschietti’s out there casting.”

The second season takes place in 1935 during the Great Depression and centers on the bloody massacre of the Bradley Gang, a group of bank robbers who stop in Derry to buy ammo and end up facing unimaginable horror.

The new setting is also going to reveal a new form for Pennywise that hasn’t been seen to date:

“I don’t think it’s a big secret. I think it’s a little bit out there, but it’s 1935, it’s a Warner Bros. gangster movie. It’s bank robbers and Hoovervilles and street urchins riding the rails, religious fundamentalism. And a different kind of Pennywise, Pennywise the way you’ve never seen that character before. So, it’s very exciting what we’re building, and it’s gonna be a big challenge because it’s a bigger season than Season 1, but we’ll see what happens.”

Bill Skarsgård is set to reprise his role as Pennywise in the new run, which will be shot across a bunch of next year ahead of a likely late 2027 or early 2028 premiere.
