Sony’s “Beatles” Films Could Go Same Day

Sony Pictures

Sony Pictures has long been targeting an April 2028 release for the Sam Mendes-directed films about The Beatles, but just how they intend to roll out the four-movie project isn’t clear.

On the weekend, Mendes’ producing partner Pippa Harris offered a tease at the BFI London Film Festival’s Industry Forum keynote session. She said:

“We want people to be able to experience them in the cinema at the same time, during the same period. Now that doesn’t necessarily mean we’re thinking that people will go and see all four films on the same day. But within the same month, you might see one a week, or you might see one film one weekend and another the next.”

That comment has led to various interpretations, with the most common being a weekly rollout of the films throughout the month. That’s not the case, according to sources for THR.

They indicate that both Sony and Mendes have been considering multiple approaches, with the big one being a potential same-day release of all four films.

In addition, they’ve also been considering that reporting on all four films’ box office receipts will be lumped together into one total – no individual tally. The reason? To avoid a ‘horse race’ as to which of the four films is more popular. Each of the films is centered around one specific member.

The trade’s sources also say the plan is to market the films as not having a particular order – that there will be no ‘right’ order in which to watch the films. All plans remain fluid amid ongoing discussions.

The cast includes Paul Mescal, Harris Dickinson, Joseph Quinn and Barry Keoghan as Paul, John, George and Ringo respectively.
