October has not been a good month for cinema as none of the three major new releases this weekend have gone over well with the critics.
The Jessica Chastain-led horror film “Other Mommy” didn’t hold critics screenings in some markets, so reviews only started coming in last night. Similarly, reviews for Ben Affleck’s new straight-to-Netflix film “Animals” were also finally published late yesterday.
The results for both are dire. On Rotten Tomatoes, “Animals” is at 41% (5.2/10) while “Other Mommy” is at just 17% (4.7/10). On Metacritic, “Animals” is at just 31/100 while “Other Mommy” is at 33/100.
To put that in comparison, last week’s “Digger” and “Verity” both scored in the low 40s on Metacritic, and both were considered duds. Even Aaron Sorkin’s “The Social Reckoning” was a bust with critics this week, the title landing a 59% (6.0/10) on RT and a 53/100 on MC.
“The Other Mommy” is expected to come out on top with $19 million this weekend, while “The Social Reckoning” is expected to do limited business with $7 million.
Next week sees both “Whalefall” and “Street Fighter” arriving to hopefully a better reception, along with several major limited releases already scoring highly – including Nathan Fielder’s Elizabeth Holmes doco “You Can See Everything” which has scored a near-unprecedented 98/100 on Metacritic.
