Back in January, a report emerged suggesting Ubisoft’s “Watch Dogs” game franchise was completely dead. That report was shot down shortly by other scoopers, including one who said “not exactly” to the claim. Now, details have emerged from Ubisoft directly indicating there’s still life in the series.
The games unfold in fictionalised versions of real-life modern-day cities which are all run by ctOS, software which offers centralised control over all major infrastructure systems across entire cities, including subway lines, electricity grids, surveillance cameras and traffic control systems.
The games follow hacker protagonists caught up in the criminal underworlds of their respective cities who are able to use their phone as a means to both lift people’s personal data and manipulate the environment around them from door locks to street lights.
Now, Insider Gaming and IGN are reporting that Ubisoft will attempt to relaunch 2020’s underselling “Watch Dogs: Legion” next year via a revamped ‘Director’s Cut’. That new take is expected to put more of a focus on the series’ more recognisable faces that were included in the game’s DLC.
At the same time, Games Radar is reporting that comments from company CEO Yves Guillemot suggest the title could be “potentially remade”.
A New Regency-produced film adaptation was shot back in mid-2024 and stars Tom Blyth and Sophie Wilde. There is still no word as yet on when that will be released.
