“Line of Duty” Team May Reboot “Doctor Who”?

BBC

“Line of Duty” and “Bodyguard” creator/showrunner Jed Mercurio is attached as executive producer to one of the proposals for a “Doctor Who” reboot at The BBC.

As previously revealed, the network launched a competitive tender for the sixteenth season of its long-running sci-fi series with the aim of getting the series on air by 2028 or 2029.

Producers will pitch in a bake-off-style process to refresh the series in a major creative overhaul of the franchise.

Today, Deadline reports that production company Hat Trick Mercurio, which Mercurio runs with Jimmy Mulville, has submitted a proposal. Mercurio is a sci-fi fan and previously created the BBC series “Invasion: Earth” in the 1990s.

In addition, a separate proposal has been submitted by production company World Productions that produces Mercurio’s various shows along with series like “Vigil,” “The Bletchley Circle” and “The Bombing of Pan Am 103”.

A third bid is coming from STV Studios, the Scottish production company on shows like “Criminal Record” and “Blue Lights”. Two different BBC Studios labels are also expected to table bids. The deadline for submissions was last Friday.
