First Look: Mike Flanagan’s “The Exorcist: Martyrs”

Universal Pictures

Ahead of the first trailer arriving on Friday, a first clip has been released from Mike Flanagan’s “The Exorcist: Martyrs” starring Scarlett Johansson, Chiwetel Ejiofor, John Leguizamo, Laurence Fishburne, Diane Lane and Sasha Calle.

The project serves as a full reboot of the franchise with “Doctor Sleep” director and “Midnight Mass” creator Flanagan essentially given carte blanche to creatively take the franchise wherever he wanted.

While no official synopsis is out yet, reports indicate the story follows a single-mother cop (Johansson) who, thirteen years after taking down a notorious satanic serial killer named Father Sunday (Leguizamo), investigates a new series of murders connected to her past.

At the same time, her twelve-year-old son becomes the target of a terrifying demonic force. Ejiofor will play a priest connected to the investigation.

Many of Flanagan’s regulars from his limited series works like “The Haunting of Hill House” and “Fall of the House of Usher” are set to co-star, including Rahul Kohli, Carla Gugino, Hamish Linklater, Gil Bellows, Carl Lumbly, Robert Longstreet, Matt Biedel, Samantha Sloyan, Kate Siegel, John Gallagher Jr., and Benjamin Pajak.

Flanagan has previously said he’s aiming to make the scariest movie he’s made and do something that has both “never been done within the franchise” and “honors what came before it but isn’t built on nostalgia”.

“The Exorcist: Martyrs” will open in cinemas in March next year while Flanagan has his reinvention of “Carrie” hitting Amazon Prime Video tomorrow.
