Focus Features has reportedly submitted Curry Barker’s “Obsession” under the ‘musical or comedy’ categories at the Golden Globes.
The move has raised some eyebrows. The film chronicles the chaos and violence that ensues after a young man is granted his wish of a young woman loving him too much.
Many awards pundits expected it to be submitted as a drama, but those associated with the film insist it’s far more a dark comedy, and THR says even the Golden Globes voters themselves have indicated they regard it as a comedy.
Certainly, the category has seen its share of genre-bending titles that questionably fit the category, like “The Martian,” “The Substance,” “Get Out,” and “Bugonia” so it’s not unprecedented.
The film, which cost just $750,000 to make, has grossed more than $500 million worldwide and has catapulted star Inde Navarrette to the top of many casting calls.
The film also faces a relatively thin line-up of contenders this year with “The Odyssey,” “La Bola Negra,” “Project Hail Mary,” “Wild Horse Nine,” and potentially “Dune: Part Three being the major competition.
