Though he’s not part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), Nicolas Cage has certainly done his share of Marvel characters – playing Ghost Rider twice and Spider-Noir in both live-action and animated form.
In the wake of the “Spider-Noir” cancellation, the actor appeared at a panel at Fan Expo Dallas earlier this month, and comments from his panel have just come to light.
In them, he’s expressed his feelings on the larger MCU and says the sheer mass of characters and long fight sequences in movies like the “Avengers” films are more comparable to TV wrestling than anything else. In addition, they underuse the talent on offer:
“I do say this with love. When I see these 50+, otherwise intelligent, remarkably gifted thespians putting on these ridiculous outfits and getting ready for the fight, let’s face it, cutting all to the fight, it’s hard for me not to be reminded that the MCU is becoming a well-funded and glorified WWE.”
Unlike some other famous people’s criticism of the MCU (looking at you Martin Scorsese), this one doesn’t appear to have been met with a backlash as people on social media have actually debated it with seeming civility.
The comments come in the wake of “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” and “Spider-Noir” both earning strong reviews for their depth and going beyond mere spectacle.
