Following its win of the top prize of the People’s Choice Award at this year’s Toronto Film Festival the other week, the trailer has now arrived for Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi’s Spanish historical epic/melodrama “La Bola Negra”.
Expected to be one of the year’s serious awards contenders, the triptych story structure spans 1932, 1937, and 2017 as it delves into the intertwined lives of three men bound by a shared thread of desire, sexuality, enduring pain and the lasting weight of their complex legacies.
In 1932, a young and closeted man tries to join an exclusive local casino in Granada. In 1937, during the Spanish Civil War, a young village trumpeter falls for a handsome prisoner. In 2017, an aimless historian investigates his family roots after inheriting a mysterious legacy from his estranged grandfather.
Penélope Cruz and Glenn Close have small supporting roles in the film which stars Guitarricadelafuente, Miguel Bernardeau, Carlos González, Milo Quifes and Lola Dueñas.
The title has been selected as the Spanish entry for Best International Feature Film at the 99th Academy Awards and clocks in at 159 minutes.
Netflix will release the film theatrically on November 6th ahead of a streaming premiere on December 4th.
