Disney and Lucasfilm are set to give the IMAX 70mm treatment to not one but two “Star Wars” films next year.
Timed with the franchise’s 50th anniversary, the re-release of the newly restored original version of George Lucas’ 1977 “Star Wars” and the brand-new Ryan Gosling-led “Star Wars: Starfighter” will both score the treatment.
The February 19th 2027 re-release of what was later renamed “Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope” will be coming to IMAX screens for the first time, with both it and ‘Starfighter’ also coming to Digital IMAX screens and regular cinemas for their runs.
Opening May 28th, “Star Wars: Starfighter” stars Gosling as Kade Auberon, a cynical rogue confronted by his mysterious past as he is hurled into a dangerous adventure across the galaxy that puts him on a crash course with destiny.
The cast includes Matt Smith, Mia Goth, Aaron Pierre, Jamael Westman, Daniel Ings, Flynn Gray and Amy Adams. Shawn Levy directs from a script by Jonathan Tropper.
IMAX 70mm screenings exploded in popularity this year due to Chris Nolan’s “The Odyssey,” the few locations available worldwide are pulling in per-screen averages of $1.9 million this year alone so far.
