“The Brutalist,” “Vox Lux” and “Childhood of a Leader” director Brady Corbet’s new film is now in production in South Africa under the working title “Salt Flats”.
According to Shot On Film, the project is being shot by cinematographer Lol Crawley on 8-perf 65mm using rare Iwerks cameras, in addition to 35mm and 16mm film.
Michael Fassbender, Cate Blanchett, Selena Gomez, Sadie Soverall and Joe Alwyn are expected to star in the film, which is rumoured to be titled “The Origin of the World”.
Corbet’s first directorial effort since “The Brutalist” landed 10 Oscar nominations; specifics remain under wraps beyond it being primarily set in the 1970s, though spanning as much as 150 years and taking place primarily in Northern California.
It will potentially be an X-rated film and is expected to have a gargantuan runtime of around four hours, with a 200-page script and a planned 50-day shoot.
Corbet has labelled it “really, really genre-defying” and a “looser style” than his prior films and is believed to tackle American mysticism and the history of the occult in America.
