The live-action/hybrid CGI “ThunderCats” film adaptation is still alive according to filmmaker Adam Wingard.
The “Godzilla vs. Kong” and “The Guest” director, currently out promoting his new film “Onslaught,” has long been attached to a film adaptation of the late 1980s Rankin-Bass animated series.
The “ThunderCats” show revolved around a group of humanoid cats who must flee their planet of Thundera after it’s destroyed. Crash-landing on another planet, Third Earth, they must thwart the evil sorcerer Mumm-Ra who is bent on killing them off.
Back in 2021, Wingard became attached to develop the film, which he was co-writing with Simon Barrett. Since then, there have been no real updates until this week when he told Polygon where it stands:
“My career’s kind of bouncing around, so different things have taken precedence. But [ThunderCats is] still kicking around. I think it’s just a matter of finding time to really re-concentrate and re-engage with it.
We did a new draft at the beginning of this year. It wasn’t too long ago, and then things got put on hold for this movie [Onslaught]. So I don’t really have any exciting updates. But it’s not dead. It lives. It’s just not the number one [thing] I’m working on right now.”
The project is separate from the project in the news back in June when Warner Bros. Pictures Animation announced that an animated feature film version of the property was in active development.
The recent failure of the live-action “Masters of the Universe” at the box-office is probably unlikely to help the live-action film’s case, and eyes will no doubt turn toward the Henry Cavill-led “Voltron” and Sydney Sweeney-led “Gundam” films coming in the next year or so and see how they fare.
