“Grand Theft Auto VI” Extended Look A Hit

Rockstar Games

Netflix’s recent 27-minute extended look at “Grand Theft Auto VI” was a hit, the title reaching 31.1 million views in its first few days according to the streamer.

The title also hit No. 1 in 87 of the 93 countries tracked globally. The news follows in the wake of third-party analysts Sensor Tower estimating the game has already pulled in nearly 5 million pre-orders months before launch.

They also indicate 77% of purchased copies are on PS5 with 23% on Xbox, and almost 90% of buyers went for the $99.99 Ultimate Edition instead of the $79.99 Standard Edition. That would suggest the title has already presold nearly half a billion dollars worth of copies so far over two months out from release.

The Netflix sneak peek also had a big impact, with pre-orders jumping by 572% the day after compared to the average recorded over the previous 30 days.

Rockstar and Take-Two haven’t announced any actual sales numbers, and Sensor Tower’s numbers are estimates based on market data and statistical modelling, so they aren’t exact.

The data comes as a debate has broken out on social media since the Netflix sneak peek about the game’s core in-depth relationship mechanic between Jason and Lucia, and whether it’s the equivalent of cheating on your real-life partner and worth breaking up over according to IGN.

Rockstar has been clear that players must actively pursue a relationship if they want that, and if you don’t then the game will still play fine. They do add that if you make the two a power couple, you’ll likely get more out of the game.
