Hayley Atwell has once again spoken about her disappointment with the way her Captain Carter character was handled in Sam Raimi’s “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” film.
Carter played the character, a spin on her Peggy Carter MCU role, in the animated “What If” anthology series to much acclaim. She then brought it into the live-action realm with the “Doctor Strange” sequel.
Trouble is the appearance, like several others in the film, was merely a cameo that saw the character introduced and then quickly killed off by Elizabeth Olsen’s Scarlet Witch.
Speaking at the For the Love of Fantasy & Sci-Fi convention in London (via Frances in London), Atwell discussed her frustrations with what happened:
If I’m really like brutally honest, I was so disappointed with how they positioned her and what happened to her in that scene. It’s so small, and she gets frisbeed to death. I tried on set to kind of go, ‘Can I just add? Can I just suggest?’ And they were like, ‘Sure, but no.’ I felt that was like a bum steer and a complete disservice to the character.”
Atwell is expected to return as the more regular Peggy Carter in “Avengers: Doomsday” later this year but does say she hopes to bring her Captain Carter guise back on the screen at some point: “I hope maybe one day in the future they’ll give her more in that capacity.”
