Sony and Marvel’s “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” unsurprisingly topped the domestic box-office in its third weekend, the title now on track for a $67 million haul from Friday to Sunday, a drop of around 54%.
Its domestic total by the end of Sunday is expected to sit at $782.8 million, making it the fifth highest grossing domestic movie of all-time.
By Monday it should overtake Avatar ($785.2 million) and during the week overtake “Spider-Man: No Way Home” ($814.8 million). Soon enough, “Avengers: Endgame” ($858.3 million) should fall, leaving only “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” ($936.6 million) left.
It easily held off two newcomers. First up is “The End of Oak Street” in fourth place, which now appears to be heading for $18-20 million following an $8.1 million haul on Friday (with previews), that’s a little less than the $25 million projected earlier this week.
Made for a relatively cost-effective $80-90 million despite a lot of VFX, the title should be pulling in around half its production budget in its worldwide opening weekend, which isn’t too bad.
It’s likely getting beaten by the PG-rated “Paw Patrol: The Dino Movie,” which looks to be pulling in around $20 million for the weekend following a $7.35 million take on Friday.
“The Odyssey” will take second place with a further $23 million – a drop of just 27% in its fifth weekend. Its total to date stands at $504.4 million Stateside. The doco “Katseye: Wild Hearts,” about girl group Trafalgar, will pull in $3.6 million for the weekend in fifth place.
Angel Studios’ “The Brink of War” film is aiming for a $2.75 million opening weekend debut. Last weekend’s “One Night Only” has plummeted to ninth place with a 61% drop.
