D23 Sees “Star Wars: Starfighter” Footage

Disney and Lucasfilm premiered the first footage for Shawn Levy’s “Star Wars: Starfighter” at D23 this evening, though sadly none of it has been officially released online.

Levy and star Ryan Gosling were on hand to introduce the footage for this all-new standalone adventure dubbed an entirely original story. The action is set in a period of time never before explored in Star Wars – specifically five years after the events of “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker”.

According to Variety, the clip shows Gosling’s pilot character Kade Auberon finding a young man playing with a starfighter jet that’s decommissioned but was known as the fastest ever built.

After fixing it, Gosling flies through various landscapes, including an ocean that shoots massive geysers, a shot of droids shooting at the ship, along with Kade’s robot pilot helping him take off.

Flynn Gray, Matt Smith, Mia Goth, Amy Adams, Aaron Pierre, Simon Bird, Jamael Westman, Daniel Ings, and Eva Mendes co-star in the film.

Oscar-winning cinematographer Claudio Miranda (“Top Gun: Maverick,” “Oblivion”) lensed the movie which will be released in cinemas on May 28th 2027, marking the 50th anniversary of the franchise. Speaking of hitting that date, Levy says:

“Our movie comes out May 2027. I’m honoured that we’re releasing our film on the same exact weekend that the original ‘Star Wars’ came out exactly 50 years earlier. ‘Starfighter’ embodies the themes of hope and family that have always been core to [these films]. It takes place in a period of time that’s never been shown in a Star Wars adventure.”

Lucasfilm CCO Dave Filoni again confirmed they’re putting the original version of George Lucas’ 1977 “Star Wars” film in cinemas for the 50th anniversary. As previously reported, that release is happening on February 19th 2027.
