Atari, Entertainment 360 and Universal Pictures have signed a deal that gives Universal the rights to develop ten classic Atari video game properties into theatrical releases reports Deadline.
The ten properties under the deal are: Asteroids, Adventure, Berzerk, Breakout, Centipede, Crystal Castles, Millipede, Missile Command, Pong and Yars’ Revenge. The aim is to create “big-scale action-adventure fare” from them.
The first project will be a film produced by Guymon Casady from a screenplay by longtime studio exec Matt Reilly and “Jungle Cruise” scribe Carl Hampe, who also produce.
Which specific title that first film will be based on is unclear. Atari chairman and CEO Wade Rosen says in a statement:
“For more than five decades, Atari has created games and worlds that have remained part of popular culture long after their original release. We are excited to work with Universal and Entertainment 360 to bring the spirit of our iconic brand and games to a new medium.”
Producer Guymon Casady says the writers of the film saw an opportunity to “build an original, large-scale adventure”.
