“District 9” and “Elysium” filmmaker Neill Blomkamp has revealed “Nightborne,” a new 13-minute sci-fi horror short created entirely by the generative AI video crafter Seedance 2.0.
The clip, released on YouTube, is said to be a ‘full test’ of a product workflow and the first step towards him making a full-length feature film using the same approach.
Blomkamp says in a post the clip “was made with real concept artists, and features the faces and voices of 32 real people.” That said, the entire final creation was made via Blomkamp directing through prompts.
He also announced Barley Studios, the company that will be his new AI studio for creating his films in the same way his Oats Studios has been for traditional film and VFX.
The clip, shot documentary style, involves a U.S. Army pilot declared dead after being shot down. However, evidence suggests she was involved in a classified program resurrecting fallen soldiers for combat.
Blomkamp did have recent success with the “Gran Turismo” film adaptation, but he’s become famous mostly for being attached to a number of projects like a “Halo” film, a new “Aliens” follow-up and “District 10” which never made it out of development.
More recently, he was hired for a “Starship Troopers” remake but there’s been no updates on it since.
