“The Acolyte” Showrunner Still Wants A Season 2

Nearly two years after the show’s cancellation, talk about the contentious “Star Wars” series “The Acolyte” has died down.

The “Star Wars” franchise is in an even more precarious position than it was back then, with “The Mandalorian and Grogu” being seen as a misfire, and the future beyond “Ahsoka” and “Star Wars: Starfighter” unclear.

Has “The Acolyte” improved in hindsight? Not necessarily, but at least the culture war aspect of it seems to have quietened.

Now, showrunner Leslye Headland has spoken a bit more about what would’ve been her Season 2 plans and hints Manny Jacinto’s Qimir would have founded the Knights of Ren. Speaking with Empire (via CBM), she says:

“I’m having a resurgence of The Acolyte in my real life. I speak with people who are really big fans, and were disappointed in the cancellation. I went to a play last night, and somebody was like, ‘I just have to tell you that I loved it.’

I would still want to do it! Absolutely. As more people discover it, I think people may want to see some form of the story come back. We did have a lot of stuff that we wanted to explore – including tying in lore to the sequels, getting into who exactly Manny [Jacinto]’s character is, his connection with [Jedi Master] Vernestra, his connection with [Sith Lord] Plagueis, and then his connection with other sequel-established things.”

The reception to the series and its subsequent cancellation has seen Disney and Lucasfilm largely abandoning the High Republic era of the franchise, even as the series was the second-most-watched TV series of 2024 on Disney+ behind only “Percy Jackson and the Olympians”.
