Disney+ has reportedly begun development of a TV series adaptation fo the 2004 Anne Hathaway-led fairytale film “Ella Enchanted”.
Hathaway is executive producing the potential series that will be written by Ilana Wolpert (“Anyone But You”), with Beth Schwartz (“Dead Boy Detectives”) as showrunner.
The original film follows 16-year-old Ella of Frell – cursed at birth to obey every command – who is sent to boarding school after her mother’s untimely death.
She begins to uncover the truth about her curse, builds an unlikely found family, and deals with an inconvenient crush on the prince of her kingdom.
The series keeps the basic premise of the movie and the original Gail Carson Levine book, but will shift it away from its “Cinderella”-style trappings for more of a coming-of-age story in a boarding school setting (a reframing akin to “Wednesday”).
Miramax Television and Paramount Television Studios are co-producing the series, while Johnathan Rice and Adam Shulman will also executive produce.
