A third film in the “Ride Along” comedy series is in early development at Universal Pictures.
Actors Ice Cube and Kevin Hart, director Tim Story, and producer Will Packer are all reportedly in early discussions to return in those capacities with Cube, Hart, Story also in talks to produce.
In addition, “Tough Guys” writer Daniel Gold has closed a deal to pen the script. The writer reportedly came up with a pitch that got everybody unified and onboard, the biggest hurdle that had stopped another film before now.
The original followed security guard Ben Barber (Hart) WHO must prove himself to his girlfriend’s brother, top police officer James Payton (Ice Cube). In doing so, Ben rides along with James on a 24-hour patrol of Atlanta.
“Ride Along” opened in 2014 and was a big domestic hit, pulling in $48.6 million over four days and landing $135 million in the U.S. and a decidedly smaller $19 million overseas.
“Ride Along 2” opened in 2016 to $41 million, ultimately grossing $91 million in the U.S. and a further $33 million overseas.
