“One Piece” S2 Debut Tops Netflix Charts

Netflix

The second season of Netflix’s live-action “One Piece” has unsurprisingly debuted atop the streamer’s charts, but didn’t make as big a splash as the first season.

The new run debuted on Netflix with 16.8 million views in its first four days of availability – a slight decrease from the 18.5 million views the first season scored in 2023.

Nonetheless, the show easily became the most-watched TV title of the week of March 9th-15th, and drew more eyeballs to the first season as well, which scored an additional 3.6 million views.

The Morgan Freeman-narrated nature docuseries “The Dinosaurs” came in second with 9.6 million views in its second week on the chart. The Alan Ritchson-led film “War Machine” was the most-watched title of the week overall with 44.4 million views.

The first season of “One Piece” spent a staggering eight weeks in the global top 10 before dropping out, becoming one of Netflix’s most watched shows of that year. Too early to tell yet if the second season will have similar legs.

Speaking with THR, co-showrunner Joe Tracz confirms they’ve completed casting for season three and are already two months into filming. Asked about going further, he says:

“All of us here have the appetite to keep telling it. There are arcs we’ll be sitting on set like, ‘Wouldn’t it be amazing to get to this moment? Wouldn’t it be amazing during this arc?’ That’s really a question for people watching the show who can keep giving us a thumbs up.”

The third season will see new faces like Xolo Maridueña as Ace, Cole Escola as Bon Clay, Awdo Awdo as Mr. 1 and Daisy Head as Miss Doublefinger along with much more extensive roles for the remaining Baroque Works faces introduced in the second season.

The news comes as Jamie Lee Curtis finally addressed why she didn’t play Dr. Kureha in the second season, telling Screen Rant: “The only reason I didn’t get to do it was because it was in South Africa and I was shooting something else, and I couldn’t go to South Africa.” She adds that Katey Sagal is a dear friend of hers and she nailed it.
