Following its SXSW premiere, reviews are now coming in for Radio Silence’s “Ready or Not 2: Here I Come” which debuts in cinemas this coming week.
Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett return to direct and Samara Weaving to once again star in the follow-up to the original well-regarded 2019 horror comedy hit.
With 22 reviews counted, the film sits at 86% on Rotten Tomatoes, slightly down on the 89% of the first film. On Metacritic its at 61/100 – slightly down on the 64/100 of its predecessor.
Here’s a sampling of reviews:
“This action-packed, blood-soaked sequel is just what fans have been waiting for the past seven years, hopefully paving the way for a trilogy in this sinister world Radio Silence has created.” – Glenn Garner, Deadline
“Nothing about [the original] necessarily posed the need for a continuation. But if they want to give it to us? Hey, I’m not complaining. Ready or Not 2: Here I Come is every bit the blood-soaked sequel we wanted.” – Sarah Campbell, Nerdist
“While there aren’t as many big laughs or surprises as the first film, Ready or Not 2 has some incredible moments… But if Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett send Grace on a third killing spree, hopefully they’ll make it a bit more focused.” – Samantha Nelson, Polygon
“Round two’s double-or-nothing approach means there are fewer surprises this time around. Yet as Weaving’s endlessly watchable bride gets even bloodier, it’s hard not to crack a smile at the relentless fun.” – Harry Stainer, Empire Magazine
“Weaving is great at expressing helpless surrender and whiteknuckle petrification… The effect of her performances is cathartic, frequently hysterical, and key to Ready Or Not 2: Here I Come‘s success.” – Andy Crump, AV Club
“More is more in Ready or Not 2. Bigger stakes, larger playing field, a higher (and more gruesome) body count, and even double the protagonists. All designed to deliver maximum crowd-pleasing fun.” – Megan Navarro, Bloody Digusting
“More bloody and gratuitously violent than the 2019 original, Ready or Not 2: Here I Come delivers short-term thrills in an emotionally hollow gore fest.” – Robert Daniels, Screen
“All you’re left with is the echo of what was better before. You watch only able to wish Weaving was given more to work with than this, or, at the very least, greater room for her iconic scream to rattle you once more.” – Chase Hutchinson, Indiewire
Set almost immediately after the events of the first film with all members of the Le Domas family dead, Grace’s actions have triggered the next stage – double or nothing.
The members of several powerful, wealthy families have to engage her in a new game, and whoever survives will essentially control the world.
Kathryn Newton, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Shawn Hatosy, Néstor Carbonell, Kevin Durand, Olivia Cheng, David Cronenberg, and Elijah Wood star in the new film which Guy Busick and R. Christopher Murphy penned the script for.
“Ready or Not 2: Here I Come” opens in cinemas on March 20th.
