Filmmakers Sam Raimi and Jordan Peele, who have never worked together before, are teaming up for “Portrait of God” at Universal Pictures.
Dylan Clark and Joe Russo (“The Inheritance”) penned the film, which will expand on the world of rising filmmaker Clark’s 7.5-minute viral horror short of the same name.
The original minimalist short centers on a religious young woman named Mia who discovers the answer to the question ‘What does God look like?. She is practising a slide presentation about a work of art dubbed ‘Portrait of God’.
For some who view the painting, it appears completely black. Others report seeing a person in the darkness – described and drawn out time and time again in consistent detail. The ‘God’ these people see certainly doesn’t appear to be a benevolent entity.
Clark has built a large following on YouTube with shorts that blend religion and technology within the horror genre. The short has pulled in over 8.6 million views on YouTube since premiering in August 2022.
Peele, Raimi, Russo, Win Rosenfeld and Romel Adam will all produce the feature for Peele’s Monkeypaw Productions and Raimi’s Ghost House Pictures labels.
