Wyatt Russell Back For “Monarch” Prequel?

Apple TV has reportedly given the green light to a prequel series take on “Monarch: Legacy of Monsters,” their series set within Legendary’s MonsterVerse franchise that began with 2014’s “Godzilla”.

Nexus Point News broke the story, reporting that the series will be set during the Cold War and grapple with tensions between the United States and Russia in a world of monsters.

Wyatt Russell (“Thunderbolts,” “Night Swim”), who played the younger Lee Shaw character in the first season of “Monarch” alongside his father Kurt Russell as the older incarnation, will reprise his role.

The first season of “Monarch” had major stretches set during the late 1950s with Russell’s young Lee as the main character. A failed expedition saw the character essentially ‘lose’ twenty years between 1962 and 1982 without aging, thus events of the prequel could take place either just before or just after those events – both time periods when the Cold War heated up.

Joby Harold (“Obi-Wan Kenobi,” “Army of the Dead”) will reportedly serve as the series’ showrunner and will executive produce with his wife and producing partner Tory Tunnell.

Russell will serve as an executive producer as well. The news comes ahead of the second season of “Monarch: Legacy of Monsters,” which launches early next year on Apple TV, and the film “Godzilla x Kong: Supernova” opening in 2027.

The prequel series is reportedly slated to begin production next Summer in Prague, suggesting either a late 2027 or 2028 airing.
