If you thought the second “Wicked” film’s box office this past weekend was huge, you ain’t seen nothing yet.
Disney’s upcoming “Zootopia” sequel is on track to have one of the biggest domestic box office openings of 2025, and possibly the biggest worldwide opening of 2025.
The title is currently on track to snag $125-150 million in the U.S. from its five-day opening, impressive in and of itself. But it’s overseas where things really get interesting.
According to BoxOfficeMojo, the film is reportedly tracking for a massive $200+ million opening in China alone. Combined with other countries’ hauls, the Disney title is reportedly headed for a potential debut of over $500 million by the end of Sunday.
That’s easily above the global opening weekends of “Lilo & Stitch” ($361 million), A Minecraft Movie” ($313 million), “Wicked: For Good” ($223 million) and “Superman” ($217 million). The only real challenger would be “Avatar: Fire and Ash” which could debut to bigger numbers.
Since the pandemic, the Chinese box office has widely ignored Hollywood blockbusters, with “Avatar: The Way of Water” the sole major exception. The biggest Hollywood opener in China this year was “Jurassic World Rebirth” at $79 million.
That film also happens to star Jonathan Bailey, the current ‘Sexiest Man Alive’ who has reportedly emerged as the highest grossing actor of 2025 to date with $1.1 billion in box-office from ‘Rebirth’ and “Wicked: For Good” so far according to Fiction Horizon (via People).
“Zootopia 2” opens in cinemas on Wednesday.
