“Project Hail Mary” Directors On Rocky Spoiler

Amazon MGM Studios

This morning saw the release of the new full trailer for “Project Hail Mary,” the highly anticipated sci-fi feature which sees “Spider-Verse” franchise creators Phil Lord and Chris Miller writing and directing an adaptation of a famed novel by “The Martian” author Andy Weir.

Drew Goddard, who penned the Ridley Scott-directed adaptation of “The Martian,” returns here as well. The film stars Ryan Gosling, Sandra Hüller, Milana Vayntrub and Ken Leung star in the film in which Gosling plays astronaut Ryland Grace who awakens on a spacecraft with no memory of himself or his mission.

He slowly deduces he is the sole survivor of a crew sent to the Tau Ceti solar system in search of a solution to a catastrophic event on Earth. In his search for answers, Grace must rely on his vast array of scientific knowledge, sheer ingenuity, and human will – but he may not have to search alone.

The trailer has been met with a pretty positive response, though one common criticism that has come up from fans of the book is that the trailer gives away too much – namely showing off some of the alien character ‘Rocky’.

Patricipating in a Reddit AMA, Lord and Miller were asked about why they decided to reveal Rocky this early rather than keeping that surprise a secret until the movie is released. They had a pretty good response:

“You can’t tell this story without introducing Rocky, because the heart of the story is the relationship between him and Grace. As fans of the book, you know Rocky is the second lead of this movie.

And what’s shown in the trailer is just a glimpse of what’s to come. Rocky is such a beautiful and ‘amaze-‘ing character, and we were all very thoughtful about what to show and when.. You all know how much more there is to this story and relationship than what is shown in the trailer, and we’re excited for everyone to see where it goes!”

The character is reportedly a physical creation “brought to life on set by lead puppeteer James Ortiz and the rest of the Rocketeers” and is considered one of the strongest practical elements of the film.

Amazon MGM Studios releases “Project Hail Mary” in cinemas on March 20th 2026.
