Neil Cross, the creator of the Idris Elba-led “Luther” TV series, confirmed a few weeks ago that future appearances of the obsessive detective John Luther character will be restricted to films from now on.
The decision was made following the success of 2023’s Netflix feature “Luther: The Fallen Sun” and followed on from comments by Cross the month before that indicated there were “extraordinarily strong possibilities” for another one.
That’s now all come true with Idris Elba confirmed to be returning for a new “Luther” film for Netflix, and this time he will be joined by Ruth Wilson reprising her iconic role of genius serial killer and love interest Alice Morgan.
Wilson didn’t appear in ‘Fallen Sun’ and was last seen in the fifth season of the series – her character’s fate unknown. Another regular, Dermot Crowley, will also be back as Luther’s boss, Superintendent Martin Schenk.
Written by Cross, the new story sees a new wave of brutal, seemingly random murders hit London, with Luther secretly called back into service. But the dramatic question is, how can Luther save London when everyone on all sides seems to want him dead?
Jamie Payne, who helmed ‘Fallen Sun’ and several episodes of the show, will direct. Shooting will commence in February.
