Amazon, Sony Pictures Television and “Battlestar Galactica” and “Outlander” alum Ronald D. Moore are currently developing a live-action TV series based on the “God of War” video game franchise.
More specifically, the work is adapting the most recent ‘Norse’ incarnation of the series that began with 2018’s reboot and continued through 2022’s “God of War: Ragnarok”. As previously reported, shooting aims to begin next year.
Now, a casting breakdown has gone online, indicating what characters will be showing up to join Kratos and his son Atreus as they traverse the Nine Realms.
DanielRPK posted the breakdown that lists codenames in place of the actual names of the characters, but it’s clear they’re introducing characters from the second game, “God of War: Ragnarok,” into the mix from the get-go.
Many of the roles require combat skills, along with the adult roles requiring nudity and being comfortable with simulated sex. Quite a few roles are for characters in their 40s or older. Except for Atreus, even the youngest are at least in their 30s.
For Kratos, they seek a male in his 40s-60s, of any ethnicity, and someone who is comfortable with intense physicality, hand-to-hand combat, and possible nudity. For Atreus, they’re looking at boys aged 9-12, again of any ethnicity. They have to be able to do “physical combat and weapons training”. Whereas Kratos is listed as a “Series Regular”, Atreus is listed as a “One-Year Series Regular”.
Three other roles are listed – ‘Alexander’, who is an unassuming white male in his 60s-70s, ‘Glen’, who is a handsome white male in his 30s-40s, and Phoebe, who is a beautiful woman of any ethnicity in her 30s-40s. Both the latter two roles require the actor to be comfortable with simulated sex and nudity, and the ‘Glen’ role requires combat skills.
All three of these roles are listed as ‘Series Regular’ roles. ‘Alexander’ is clearly Odin, whereas ‘Glen’ is very likely to be the 2018 game’s antagonist, Baldur. ‘Phoebe’ is the one that’s not clear, as speculation was initially that it was Freya – but the lack of combat requirements has now shifted to Thor’s wife Sif.
Five other supporting roles are also listed, each billed as recurring guest stars, and two of them scored a ‘series regular’ option for a second season. Those two appear to be descriptions for Thor and Freya while the other three are for Faye, Sigrun and Magni.
Recent rumours have suggested the likes of Dave Bautista, Henry Cavill, Winston Duke and Joe Manganiello for the role of Kratos.
The story follows Kratos, the God of War, who, after exiling himself from his blood-soaked past in ancient Greece, hangs up his weapons forever in the Norse realm of Midgard.
When his beloved wife dies, Kratos sets off on a dangerous journey with his estranged son to spread her ashes from the highest peak—his wife’s final wish. Kratos soon realises the journey is an epic quest in disguise, one which will test the bonds between father and son, and force Kratos to battle new Gods and monsters for the fate of the world.
