Filmmaker Zach Cregger has confirmed that plans for a “Weapons”spin-off prequel following the Aunt Gladys character is in the works.
Speaking with Fangoria in a new interview, Cregger says: “It is real and I’ve been talking to Warner Bros. about it. There’s a story and I’m pretty excited about it. It’s not bulls–t.”
The trades broke the news last month, saying the film would explore the origin of Aunt Gladys (Amy Madigan), the mysterious orange-haired, massive eyeglass-wearing and doused in make-up elderly woman who suddenly arrives in town.
Cregger reportedly had a chapter focused on Gladys (Amy Madigan) and some of her backstory; however, he ultimately pulled that section from the script for length purposes. Now it appears that the lost chapter could be expanded into a full-length story.
“Weapons” has been a box-office success, grossing more than $260 million worldwide. Cregger’s immediate next film is a reboot of the “Resident Evil” franchise which is due out next year.
Cregger has explained his film will feature original characters not featured in the source material, but will be set in the same world and a “love letter to the games and follows the rules of the games”.
