Guadagnino, Roberts Talk “Wedding” Sequel

Sony Pictures

Oscar winner Julia Roberts has addressed recent reports about her potential involvement in a proposed sequel to 1997’s classic romantic comedy “My Best Friend’s Wedding”.

The original film saw Roberts making a pact with her male best friend (Dermot Mulroney) that they would marry each other if both of them were unmarried by the age of 28. Trouble is, he’s found his girl (Cameron Diaz) leading to her trying to sabotage the wedding.

In a recent interview with Variety while promoting Luca Guadagnino’s “After the Hunt,” Roberts was asked if the studio had already approached her about reprising her “My Best Friend’s Wedding” role and she confirmed they have already been talking to her about the project.

Sadly she wasn’t able to provide any further details as nothing is set yet. Guadagnino then reportedly chimed in, expressing his interest in potentially directing the sequel.

He added that if given the chance, he’d direct the film “in a second” with Roberts’ co-star Andrew Garfield adding the director would be a “fantastic” choice.

At last report, “Past Lives” and “Materialists” director Celine Song is attached to pen the screenplay. P.J. Hogan directed the original.
