“The Bear” actress Ayo Edebiri has reportedly completed writing the screenplay for the upcoming live-action film based on the “Barney the Dinosaur” kids franchise.
According to The InSneider, the finished script is being described as a “banger” and aims to “recapture the magic” for a generation that grew up watching PBS’ original show “Barney & Friends”.
That show followed the singing and dancing purple dinosaur and became a pop culture icon since making their debut in 1992.
The story is rumored to follow “a group of people who magically enter Barney’s world through an old episode of the series.”
It was previously reported that the aim is for a tone akin to “Barbie,” in being both a tribute and satire along with an examination of the larger societal impact of the character.
Oscar nominee Daniel Kaluuya has been attached to the project since 2019 and is still slated to produce via his 59% Productions banner. Robbie Brenner and Rowan Riley are asl producing.
Edebiri will be seen later this year in Luca Guadagnino’s “After the Hunt” and James L. Brooks’ “Ella McCay”.
