“Lights Out,” “Annabelle: Creation” and “Shazam” director David F. Sandberg has come on board to direct a new film based on “The Amityville Horror” franchise at Amazon MGM Studios.
Ian Goldberg and Richard Naing (“The Conjuring: Last Rites”) wrote the screenplay for his reimagining of the original 1979 classic. Sandberg, Peter Safran and John Rickard will produce.
The original film starred Josh Brolin, Margot Kidder and Rod Steiger and followed a young couple who purchase a home in upstate New York, unaware it was the sight of a grizzly mass murder the year before.
Shortly after settling in, they claim to experience a series of unsettling paranormal phenomena. The new version is dubbed a ‘reimagining’ but plot specifics are under wraps.
The news follows on from reports a few months back that the producers of “Weapons” are developing a new Amityville project set around a the public domain folk tale as opposed to the film series. Joseph and Vanessa Winter will be writing/directing that.
Sandberg most recently directed the film adaptationof the “Until Dawn” video game.
